Stewed Apples or Pears

Even easier than compote, and some people like it better.
Ingredients for 2-3 servings: ½ kg apples or pears, ½-1 cup water, 4-5 cloves or 3 cm cinnamon, optional. Some sugar to taste depending upon the tartness of the fruit.
Preparation: The fruit should be of a tart, crisp variety. Pell, core and then slice it.
Method: Place the fruit in a pan with the sugar and water and optionally spice. Bring slowly to the boil, and simmer till tender and slightly mushy.
Cool and chill. Serve with or without cream.
